Candy and safety
The FDA’s Halloween advice for parents:
- Give children a light meal before they go, and have them wait until they get home so you can check their treats.
- Do not accept or eat anything that is not commercially wrapped.
- Check wrapped treats for signs of tampering, such as an unusual appearance, discoloration, tiny pinholes or torn wrappers, and throw away anything suspicious.
St. Johns County’s Solid Waste Division suggests giving jack-o’-lanterns a second life after Halloween: compost unpainted, untreated pumpkins, or ask a farm or animal sanctuary whether it takes fresh ones, its October newsletter says.
What this means for you
- Check your neighborhood or HOA for its trick-or-treat times; the county sets none.
- Inspect candy at home before children eat it.
